8 DAYS KILIMANJARO-LEMOSHO ROUTE

8 Days

Overview

The Lemosho route is one of our preferred routes due to its minimal traffic, gorgeous scenery and a high summit success rate. It is advised to have atleast 7 days hiking for better acclimatization and summit success. The Lemosho route joins the Machame route at Shira 2 Camp and then follows the same route through the southern circuit and descending at Mweka Gatewhich it then follows across the southern circle before descending at Mweka Gate.

Itinerary

You will be picked up at your hotel in the morning after breakfast and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro for registration procedures. Thereafter precede hiking steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades to reach Big for dinner and overnight stay. It takes 7km 4 hours walk from Lemosho glades to Big Tree Camp

Proceed hiking after breakfast early in the morning across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations to conquer Shira 1 Camp for dinner and overnight stay. It takes 8.5 km, 7 hours walk.

A gentle walk across the plateau leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Our steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatization and we enjoy great panoramic views. In the afternoon you will take an acclimatization walk then head back to camp for dinner and overnight. The walk takes 8km five hours.

From the Shira Plateau, proceed to the east towards the peak of Kibo after breakfast. Here our path goes east, towards the Lava Tower, also called the Shark’s Tooth. Shortly after passing the Lava Tower, we meet the second junction that brings us to the Arrow Glacier. This takes us down to the Barranco Hut, where we shall rest for dinner and overnight stay. The walk takes 7km six to 8 hours.

After breakfast, we take short scramble to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over scree and ridges to the Karanga Valley, beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. Thereafter proceed hiking the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail, used for descend from the mountain later. Then proceed to the Barafu Camp for dinner and rest. From Barafu you can enjoy the view of two volcanic cones Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The walk takes 5.5 km, 5 hours

After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp we get rest for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. The walk will take 3km 3 hours.

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The following six hours will be spent hiking by headlamp. This probably the most challenging route that require great physical and mental efforts.. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. After short rest at Stella point you hike long the crater rim to negotiate Uhuru peak.Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. Breakfast will be taken while taking a brief break at Barafu Camp. At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp

After breakfast, complete the trek with a hike through the forest to Mweka Gate for about four hours. The trail may be slippery following rain. You will be picked at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Moshi.
